Great Book Adventure

The Spot to learn more about the Great Book Adventure Letterboxing Gathering, to be held October 21, 2006 in Tomball TX. Check back regularly for updates.

Name:
Location: Houston, Texas, usually

I write, sometimes even for money, but usually not. I cook; I avoid cleaning if possible. I do the New York Times Crossword Puzzle every day. I carve my own rubber stamps and do assorted things with them, including letterboxing. I occasionally get riled up about something or other. I lean left, but I like dialog and respectful debate.

More Stamps than People?

We know Houston probably ISN'T on your list of places to visit for a letterboxing gathering (assuming you are out-of-state). But, we're working hard to try and bring in stamps from as many boxers as we can - keep checking the 'Contributors' listing as we update it constantly. So even if the only people we get to see down here are our fellow Texans, we sure are going to enjoy seeing stamps from the PNW, Great Lakes, NY, East Coast, and so on. We may actually set a record for the most stamps contributed by boxers who DIDN'T come to the gathering!

So, give it a thought. We'd love to see you!

Who's Your Character?

All attendees are encouraged to carve a literary themed personal traveler for the event. Those who do will have access to a special bonus box.

For fun, we're asking you not to state the name of your character traveler, but instead to turn it into a guessing game.

You could do something like this:

My abode is on Baker Street;
Logical reason is my feat
I am a Study in Scarlet
For that criminal I will get!

or something much more obtuse:
Call is my friend and partner.
We met during our Ranger days.
My fictional town shares a name with my book.
Who Am I?

or just plain mysterious:
I live in a room on the "tippy-top floor."

I'm having a hard time deciding which character I want to be--so many great books, so many great characters!

Psssst. . .Wanna carve a stamp?

We're looking for stamp donations for the event. We've gotten an interesting mix of stamps from experienced and new letterboxers from across the country, but we could always use more. Look here for an updated list soon, but in the meantime, you can leave a comment or email one of us to let us know the book you're itching to carve!

On the Trail of Great Characters

Rumor in the usually closed-page world of publishing is it that excitement is brewing among the denizens of some of the most amazing stories ever written. Well-known icons like Peter Rabbit, King Arthur, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Tom Sawyer, Elizabeth Bennett, Miss Marple, Hamlet, Jane Eyre, Scout & Boo Radley and others are all plotting to attend The Literary Event of the Year!

Who knows who you'll run into on the trails, in the woods and around town! Announcing the Great Book Adventure Gathering!

Come and find out what happens when
Harry Potter invites the Mad Hatter for tea!
Sherlock Holmes uncovers a pirate's treasure map!
The Last of the Mohicans thinks inside the box!
Titian-haired Nancy Drew finds the clue in the Hollow Oak!

Page One turns at 9 am on Saturday October 21, 2006.
Our story ends at 4 pm.

Chapters in Between: Potluck Lunch, literary Fun & Games, exchanges and of course lots and lots of boxing (more than 30 boxes matching our theme).

Events before and after may be arranged, depending on interest. So save the page in your datebook and book your plans now to attend one Write Event that'll be a Story to Remember! Find out how great Houston boxing is, plus find boxes carved by carvers from around the US--all at one of the best seasons of the year to be boxing in Southeast Texas!

Activities (to be updated regularly as we pile on the fun)--
__Book Walks. Look for at least 5 different themed book "walks." On each book walk, you'll find 6 letterboxes representing a specific genre, from children's books to mysteries. When you arrive at the gathering, you will receive a clue booklet with the clues for each walk.
__Carve a literary-themed personal traveler for the event, you get bonus box clues! For maximum fun, don't give away the name of your character or author in your title, instead turn it into a guessing "Who Am I" game.--
__Bookcrossing Bookswap. Bring a paperback to trade in our book depot. Special stamp for the Bookcrossing Box.--Character Parade. If you or your child dresses up as a book character from a book (hey Halloween is around the corner), expect a bonus as well.
__Literary Trivia Contest
__Early bird Coffee & Donuts (and special early bird stamp) from 8 to 10am
__Potluck lunch at 12:00pm.
